McGoughs and McGues in the 1900 Census of the United States by Hugh McGough

"The 1900 census is the only available federal census that provides the month and year of birth of the person enumerated. The other US censuses include only the age in years. The 1900 census is also the only census to record the number of years couples were married, the number of children born to the mother, and how many were living at the time of the census. This census was the first to indicate how long an immigrant had been in the country, whether a home or farm was owned or rented, and whether the owned property was free of a mortgage. Sarah S. McGough, age 19, born in November, 1880, in Alabama. [Sarah Margaret McGough married William Byrden (Bird) Farris; she died on March 29, 1961. Here is a posting I made on Genealogy.com on September 1, 2003: "Carolyn McGough Rowe, in her prodigious work: A Glimpse of the Past: Descendants of Robert McGough (b 1725 Northern Ireland), at page 125, says: 'Sarah McGough was the fourth child of Andrew Jackson McGough and Mary Ann Keeton. She was born on November 1, 1880, in Walker county, Alabama. She married W. E. "Byrd" Farris in Walker county on February 15, 1905. He was a coal miner. Rowe lists 8 of their children. Sarah died on March 29, 1961, and Byrd died on June 30, 1974. They are buried together at Old Flatwoods Cemetery in Walker county.'" On November 19, 2007, I received an email from Donna Howell, great-great granddaughter of William Farris smd Sarah McGough. Her father's mother was Bessie A. Farris, daughter of William and Sarah. She points out that William's middle name was "Byrden," and that her father said that, to his knowledge, William Farris was always a farmer, and never a coal miner. The 1910 census of precinct 25, Walker county, Alabama, lists Burdan Farris (indexed by Ancestry.com as Buden), age 28, married 6 years to Sarah, as a laborer in a mine (T-624, roll 36, page 2A, line 98). (The majority of the other working men on the same page of the 1910 census were also listed as laborers in a mine. There were six coal mines operating in Walker county in 1891.) The World War I draft registration card (on Ancestry.com) of "William Bird Farris" of Walker, Alabama, which was filed on September 18, 1918, records that he was 39 years old, born on August 24, 1879, married to Sarah, with on occupation of farming. The 1920 ensus of Prospect (precinct 33), Walker county, Alabama, lists W. Bird Farris, age 38, as a general farmer, with his wife Sarah and 6 children (T-625, roll 44, page 10A, line 23). Living next door was Mannuel McGough, age 60, also a general farmer. The 1930 census of Yellow Shanks, Walker county, Alabama, lists Berth Farris, age 48, as a general farmer (roll 52, page 19A, line 26).]

His first wife was Bridget Casey (1847–1884), who died in Chicago on March 23, 1884. His second wife was Mary McDonnell (1867–1913).
