McGoughs, McGeoughs, and McGeoghs in Canada in the Nineteenth Century

This page collects data about McGoughs and McGeoughs in Canada in the 1800s. Most of the information comes from sources available on the Internet. The formatting and cross-referencing of this information is rough. My next step is to check microfilm copies of the Canadian census returns that are not published on the Internet.

Canada is divided into ten provinces and three territories. Each of these entities may have different types of subdivision, used for purposes. Counties of Canada. See also Government in Canada. Geographical Names of Canada provides a searchable database of place names. In this site, I list in alphabetical order the provinces and territories, and counties within those provinces or territories, in which I found McGoughs or a variant of the name.

My US census pages are organized by counties. The data below is also organized by counties. This may be confusing, and not always accurate. In modern Canada, census districts are voting districts, not counties. Though the census district may have the same name as a county, it may not include the same townships.

Canadian Maps and Sources——

A primary source is The Canadian Genealogy Centre.

The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection—Canada Maps and The Atlas of Canada—contains a variety of maps of Canada. See also the W. H. Pugsley Collection of Early Canadian Maps, part of The Digital Collections Program, McGill University Libraries; the Electoral Atlas of the Dominion of Canada (1895) on the Library and Archives of Canada; and In Search of Your Canadian Past: The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project. Ancestry.com has published a detailed map of Canada and Newfoundland. Some maps of provinces are listed below under the particular province.

For a list of Internet resources, see my page of Links under Canada. See: Immigrants to Canada. A good list of links will be found at the Canadian Genealogy Centre and at Canadian Genealogy and History Links. For another comprehensive list of Canadian genealogical websites, go to Cyndi's List of Genealogical Web Sites on the Internet and look under Canada.

The 1881 census of Canada is reproduced on Family Search, the website of the Family History Library in Salt Lake city. The census is word searchable. On the home page of the website, click on Search Genealogy Records & Library—U.S., British, & Canadian Census Collections. In the Census box, enter: 1881 Canadian Census. The provinces are in alphabetical order. The only McGoeys I found were in Quebec.

Automated Genealogy in its 1901 Census of Canada Indexing Project provides an index to every name enumerated in the 1901 Census of Canada with the personal data transcribed, links to images of the original census pages, and links to other records for individuals including census records from other years, birth, marriage, death, and other records. No registration or payment is required to view the index. The 1911 Census of Canada Indexing Project is now complete and being proofread.

Proposed Amalgamation of Various Ontario Communities, compiled by Michael Dawber, points out: "The amalgamation, re-organization, and in some cases, total abolishment of Ontario counties, townships and towns, will cause headaches for historical researchers." This website helps straighten out the confusion.

ON—Waterloo County

Here is a map of Waterloo county and here is an 1885 map.

Waterloo Township.

Buried in Woodland, Kitchener, cemetery (sections G, H, HC), Waterloo county, Waterloo township, are Peter McGough and Helen McGough. See Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid. In an email of October 26, 2003, Peter James McGough III of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, who was born in Toronto, tells me that this Peter McGough and Helen (Marley) McGough were his grandparents:

"My grandfather for whom I was named after was one of 10 brothers and sisters and was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in I believe 1900 (Feb. 29th). Planters Peanuts was started in Wilkes-Barre and he started working for them in his early teens and moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1925 to start Planters of Canada of which he was President from 1925 until his retirement in 1965.

"My father who is Peter Jr. and was called Bud by all our relatives in Pennsylvania to avoid confusion with my grandfather, was born in Toronto in 1925 and he has two younger sisters named Helen and Sandra. All are still living and all grew up in Toronto. My grandmother was also born in Wilkes-Barre and her maiden name was Helen Marley. I noticed on your site that you list them as being buried in Woodside Cemetery in Kitchener which is correct. My grandfather died in July of 1986 at his home in Kitchener."

Peter McGough is listed in the 1910 census of the city of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, as the ten year old son of James and Margaret McGough. In the 1900 census of the same city he is listed as the three month old son of James and Margaret McGoff. For a fuller report on the census information available, see my page Inconsistent Census Reporting under the heading "Census Records of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania."

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917–1918 Record (Roll: 1927076 available on Ancestry.com) list Peter James McGough of Wilkes-Barre, who was born on February 28, 1900, and who registered for the draft on September 18, 1918, in Wilkes-Barre. The registration form shows his address as 624 North Main, Wilkes-Barre. He listed as his nearest relative Mrs. Margaret McGough at the same address, and his employment as an assistant foreman at "Planters P & Chocolate Co", South (or East?) Pennsylvania, Wilkes-Barre. His height was "tall," his build was "slender', his eye color was blue, the color of his hair was brown, and he had no disability.

An email of November 4, 2005, from Jim Tighe tells more of this family:

"I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for all the work you and your family put into your McGough website. My mother discovered it and I have never seen her so happy at the resource you have provided, and now she is intent on completing the project she started shortly after my Grandfather passed away. She was especially thrilled when she saw her cousin Peter McGough had written you and his note on his grandfather in Kitchener Canada was included on your site. (Peter McGough that moved from Wilkes Barre was my Mom's uncle, her father was James P. McGough.

"He was not born at the time of the 1900 census. James P. McGough b. Jan 4 1906 d. Dec 9 1985. He was buried in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Moscow Pa. He was married to Mary Scott, moved to Scranton and had three children Alice, Margret, and James along with 10 grandchildren. My grandmother is buried with him."

Here is an email I received on May 4, 2003, from Alan Gorman of Sudbury, Ontario:

"I notice that you have posted on your website Michael McGough from Onslow in Pontiac County. I am a descendant of Michael's and thought you might be interested in adding the following information. Michael is buried in St. Bridget's Cemetery in North Onslow Quebec along with his wife, Honour Dolan. The couple were natives of County Mayo, Ireland and emigrated to Canada circa 1847. Their gravestones still stand in St. Bridget's cemetery. Their daughter Mary (1843-1873) married Michael Foran and were my ggg grandparents.

Here is an email received on August 30, 2007, from Sharon Jack:

"Michael Mcgough born in 1818? county Mayo is my gggrandfather he married Honor Dolan March 12, 1841 Castlebar/Aglish parish Mayo. His son is John born in quebec 1847. Their 16 year old son's name is Samuel, my grandfather."

County Mayo marriage records show that Michael McGough married Honor Dolan on March 12, 1841. Marriages in the Castlebar/Aglish Parish 1840–1855. See my page: McGoughs in County Mayo.

In a later email, Sharon Jack told me that her great-great-grandfather, Michael McGough, her great grandfather, John McGough, and her father Samuel McGough, were all buried under the surname McGoff:

"Samuel was John's son. I also have picture of the grave stones at St Bridget's. My mother 'Genny' was the last person buried in the old graveyard in Quyon in 1998. She was buried with the parents Samuel McGoff and Gertrude Cain, grandparents John McGoff and Maryann Weir, and Great Grandparents Michael McGoff (McGough) and Honor Dolan."

QC—Rimouski-Temiscouata Counties (Isle Verte)

Isle Verte

L'Isle-Verte is a small municipality on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River between Rivière du Loup and Rimouski in the province of Québec. John McGough, who was born in Ireland around 1820, married Angela Cote, who was born in Isle Verte on June 9, 1824. The marriage occurred on January 13, 1845, in the church of the parish of St. Jean Baptiste in Isle Verte. For a map of the villages mentioned below, see: Antoine and Pierre Roy along the Saint Lawrence River on Family pages for Maxime Roy and Henry Boucher (Our Roy and Boucher Family). Isle Verte is within #63 on the Map of the Old Québec Counties on this website. (Note that Aroostoook county, Maine, is almost immediately south—across either #62 Kamouraska county or #64 Temiscouata county; #65 Rimouski county is immediately east. See: The Aroostook War, by Scott Michaud, and The Border Dispute—How the Maine-New Brunswick border was finalized, by C. Gagnon.)

Angela Cote was a descendant of Jean Baptiste Cote (1670 - 1736) who became the fifth Lord of Isle Verte in 1711, and settled there in the same year. Côtés were Lords of Isle-Verte for 138 years from February 11, 1711 to October 23, 1849, that is, for 138 years. The ninth and last Lord Cote, also named Jean Baptiste Cote (spouse of Adele McClure), took over from his father, Barthélémy Côté, on November 20, 1846. The parents of Angela Cote were Francois Cote and Madeline Patoine. See: Cote & Cloutier: Surnames. See also: Quebec Vital Records (Drouin Collection), 1621–1967 (S87) on Our Roy and Boucher Family.

Joan Lozier has compiled a list of 38 McGoughs on Isle-Verte, in Quebec City, with supporting data on births, marriages, deaths, burials, census listing, and the like, on her excellent website: Genealogy Website for: Levesque, Lozier, Macola, Messina.

[A posting from <bethwearing@home.com> of Toronto says that John McGough was born in Isle Verte. (The census return says Irlande, not Isle Verte, but there is an asterisk after Irelande referencing an unusual note in the right margin. The note is in French and t requires translation. The census return denotes John McGough and the children with a B for British, and Angela Cote with an F for French. The B for each the children has next to it an F which has been crossed out. The thrust of the marginal note seems to be that, even though the father of the children, John McGough, whose surname the children bear, was of British origin, the mother was French Canadian, and the family regards the children as French Canadian. Notice that the son, Thomas, age 7 in this census, lists himself as of French, not Irish or British, heritage in the 1911 census of Jacques Cartier ward of Quebec City, above.) According to information on his marriage certificate, John McGough's parents were Thomas McGough and Elizabeth McKenna. Thus far, I have seen no evidence that they ever left Ireland. John McGough was married on January 13, 1845, to Angele Cote at the church of the parish of St-Jean Baptiste in Isle Verte. Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan does not have counties; it has Rural Municipalities. The Municipal Relations Division of the Saskatchewan Department of Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs maintains a Municipal Directory of these rural municipalities. In dividing this section of my web page, I have used numbered areas of the province of Saskatchewan published by the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society.

The Rural Municipality Locator of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society publishes a map that breaks Saskatchewan into eleven numbered areas, and lists Rural Municipalities by area. Areas #1, #2, and #3 run east to west across the bottom (southern portion) of the province of Saskatchewan, along the North Dakota and Montana borders. Areas #4, #5, #6, and #7 run roughly from east to west and form the next tier to the north. Area #8, #9, and #10 run from east to west form a third tier to the north. Area #11 is made up of roughly the north half of the province. The numbered areas of the maps are sectioned into small numbered squares. I use this system below to designate the parts of Saskatchewan where I found McGoughs and McGeoughs. Where the sector is also given names, I have taken that name from the first "zoom out" on the Saskatchewan City & Town Maps - Directory, and the second name from the second "zoom out."

For more information, see: Saskatchewan GenWeb—Getting Started Resources.

Most of the names in this section come from a database of Western Land Grants (1870-1930). Entering the surname McGough in their search engine produce eight entries. Entering McGeough produced six entries. This database describes homesteads by section, township and range. I found a map on the Internet that allows identification of sections, township and ranges with a nearby town on a railroad line: CNR Historical Map—Saskatchewan. This map was published by the "Department of Colonization and Agriculture" of the Canadian National Railways, and contains instruction on how to find land on the map from a reference to the section, township, and range.

"Townships are numbered from south to north starting at the U.S. border. They are numbered from 1 to 129 and 141. Ranges are numbered from east to west starting from each meridian, except for the west-to-east numbering used for the Principal and East of the Coast Meridians. They are numbered 1 to 34."

For an explanation of the homestead process and homestead records, see Homestead Records on Saskatchewan GenWeb.

For other maps of Saskatchewan, see Map Resources on Saskatchewan GenWeb. See also Saskatchewan City & Town Maps—Directory and Querying Canadian Geographical names.

Northeast of Parry (Area 1—#99) (Saskatchewan Assiniboia sector, Saskatchewan South Central sector) (about 11 miles north of the town of Pangman). Parry is a hamlet on highway 622, about 45 miles south of Regina, and about half way between Regina and the Montana border. Here is a map showing the location of Parry in the Assiniboia sector of Saskatchewan. [Parry: Province/Territory: Saskatchewan. Feature type: Hamlet. Location: 1-10-21-W2 Latitude - Longitude: 49° 47' 00" N - 104° 44' 00". W NTS Map: 072H15 CGNDB Unique Identifier HAGOI] Note that this is in the same township as the land of John McGeough, below. Western Landgrants (1870–1930). The town of Milestone is in the same square on the area maps as is Parry; go to Area 4—#99. (99 appears in both Area 1 and Area 2.) Milestone is about 40 miles south by southeast of Regina, and about 20 miles north by northeast of Parry. Phyllis Devereux, in her book McGeough—The Story of an Irish Family, at page 99, lists under "Some Other U.S. McGeoughs" Bernard McGeough, who was born about 1850, lived in Saskatchewan near Milestone, Canada, and died in Eugene, Oregon, in 1915. Devereux's notes says that he had two sons, John and Joseph, another boy, and eight girls. The John listed immediately below was probably a son, and Joseph L. McGeough listed under Area 4 may also have been a son.

John McGeough acquired as a homestead: Part SE, Section 12, Township 10, Range 20, Meridian W2. Note that this is in the same township as the land of Bernard McGeough, above. Western Landgrants (1870–1930). John was probably a son of Bernard McGeough.

Here is a listing from the 1906 census of SK Assiniboia West District (#12) (see also: Schedule No. 1. Population and Livestock. Province Saskatchewan, District 12 Assiniboia West Subdistrict 3b North):

1 11 McGough John Head M M 42, born in Ireland, emigrated to Canada in 1865; residing in section 15, township 17, section 12; post office address: Herbert. ["John married Birdie A. John was living in Pierre, Hughes Co., South Dakota in 1900 and in Canada in 1906." From a posting on GenForum by Linda (Frank Debarea) of January 7, 2007, called John McGough/Birdie Cooper/South Dakota & Canada.]

2 11 McGough Birdy Wife F M 25, born in the United States, emigrated to Canada in 1905.

The 1906 census of Saskatchewan, District 15 (Qu'Appelle), subdistrict # 17, at page 3, house 37, row 18, lists John McGeough, single, age 27, born in the USA, who immigrated in 1905, on section 12, township 10, range number 20. Next door is, at house 38, row 18, is Barney McGeough, single, age 24, born in the USA, who immigrated in 1905, also on section 12, township 10, range number 20. (For another link to the census, which lists lists both John and Barney McGeough as age 24, and both single, see: SK Qu'Appelle (#15)). Could these be sons of Bernard McGeough listed in the 1900 US census of Shieldsville, Rice county, Minnesota, as follows: John McGeough, age 23, born June, 1876, Minnesota, laborer; Bernard McGeough, age 19, born in November, 1880, Minnesota, farm laborer? The 1920 census of Shieldsville, Rice county, Minnesota, indicates that this Bernard McGeough (italicized below) had lived in Canada long enough for his two young son to have been born there, but later moved back with his parents, Bernard and Mary, in Shieldsville. Here are the entries from the 1920 census of Shieldsville:

(1920) Bunard (sic) McGeough (head), age 77, owner of property free of a mortgage, born in Ireland, emigrated in 1872, naturalized in 1878, general farmer (T-625, roll 856, page 3A, line 1)

Simpson

Patrick B. McGeough acquired: Part: SE, Section 17, Township 29, Range 26, Meridian W2. About five miles west of the village of Simpson (Saskatchewan Regina sector, Saskatchewan South Central sector), 15 to 20 miles west by northwest of the northern tip of Last Mountain Lake. The town of Nokomis is 20 miles east of Simpson. Here is a map showing Simpson in the Regina sector of Saskatchewan. The lake on the east edge of the map is Last Mountain Lake. This may be the Patrick McGeough who, in the 1900 census of Redwood county, Minnesota, is listed as the 21 year old son, born in December of 1878, of Josef and Mary McGeough. He had younger brothers, John McGeough, age 17, and Joseph McGeough, age 10, both of whom moved to Saskatchewan. See Area 6, below, and see my page: McGoughs and McGues in the 1900 Census of the United States under Redwood county, Minnesota. Or he may have been a son of Bernard McGeough listed in the 1900 US census of Shieldsville, Rice county, Minnesota, as follows: Patrick McGeough, age 16, born September, 1883, Minnesota, at school. Two of this latter Patrick's brothers, may have moved to Saskatchewan in 1905. See the entries above under Saskatchewan, Area 1—Parry. Patrick McGeough, the son of Bernard and Mary McGeough, was living with his parents in Shieldsville in both 1910 and 1920.]

Nokomis/Govan

Joseph L. McGeough acquired, in December, 1913: Part: SE, Section 6, Township 28, Range 22, Meridian W2. 10 miles southeast of the town of Nokomis (Area 6 #280) (Saskatchewan Regina sector, Saskatchewan South Central sector). Here is map showing the location of Nokomis in the Regina sector of Saskatchewan. [Name : Nokomis. Province/Territory: Saskatchewan. Feature type: Town. Location : 27-29-22-W2 Latitude - Longitude: 51° 30' 00" N - 105° 00' 00" WNTS Map: 072P11 CGNDB Unique Identifier: HATOI] Western Landgrants (1870–1930). (Reference: Liber: 583 (December 11, 1913– December 18, 1913), Folio: 120, File reel number: C-6400, Names: Joseph L McGeough.). See: Nokomis History—Western Land Grants—Nokomis & District.

The town of Govan (#250) is about 10 miles south by southeast of Nokomis, almost exactly where Joseph L. McGeough acquired his land. Here is a posting on Ancestry.com by Denis McGeough on February 5, 2005, under "McGeoughs from Vesta, MN area: "My gf (probably John A. McGeough) emigrated from Vesta to Govan, Sask, Cn in 1905, with another brother Joseph and farmed there. I was born there as well as my father. Looking for his father's name and any siblings." Based on this note, it is safe to say that this Joseph L. McGeough was probably the son of the Josef McGeough who is listed in the 1900 census of the US in Redwood County, Minnesota.

Joseph L. McGeough's older brother was probably John A. McGeough who acquired land in SE 15 28 21 (Township 28 Range 21 W2), in the Nokomis District. See: Nokomis History—Western Land Grants—Nokomis & District. He is listed in the 1900 census of Redwood county, Minnesota, as the son of Joseph and Mary McGeough: John A. McGeough, age 17, born October, 1882, Minnesota, at school. (see below). His younger brother, Joseph, was listed as age 10.

By letter of February 2006, Anne McGeough Klotzel of Regina, Saskatchewan, tells me that she is the 49-year old eldest granddaughter of Joseph Lawrence McGeough, originally from Vesta, Minnesota, who farmed in the Govan region. She tells me that Joseph Lawrence McGeough died in 1978, and that he had five children, one of whom was her father, William Joseph McGeough, who is 79 and still lives and farms in Govan.

Semans

John A. McGeough acquired: Part: 6, Section 15, Township 28, Range 21 Meridian, W2. At the village of Semans (Saskatchewan Regina sector, Saskatchewan South Central sector), about 13 miles east by south east of Nokomis (Area 6—#280), about 67 miles north of Regina. [Name : Semans. Province/Territory: Saskatchewan. Feature type : Village. Location : 22-28-20-W2 Latitude - Longitude: 51° 25' 00" N - 104° 44' 00" W. NTS Map : 072P07 CGNDB Unique Identifier : HATPD] Western Landgrants (1870–1930). He was almost certainly the older brother of Joseph L. McGough, listed immediately above, who is listed in the 1900 census of Redwood County, Minnesota, as the son of Joseph and Mary McGeough: "John A. McGeough, age 17, born October, 1882, Minnesota, at school."
