McGoughs and McGues in the 1860
Census of the United States

These are my notes on McGough and McGue families in the 1860 census of the United States. McGues are included because that surname usually represents a family whose name was recorded as McGough or McGeough in Ireland. McGows are listed only when other information identifies them as McGoughs, since McGow is most often a form of McGowan. When a surname is listed in another census as McGough or McGeough, I list it here; for example, the John McGoue who is listed in this 1860 census of Queensbury, Warren county, New York, is listed as John McGeough in the 1870 census of the same place.

For a listing of McGoughs in the United States after the Civil War, see my page: McGoughs and McGues in the 1870 Census of the United States. There is some repetition in cross references between this 1860 page and my 1870 page, but I have more often placed biographical material in my page on the 1870 census rather than here.

The states in which I found a form of McGough in the 1860 census are listed alphabetically. Within a state, counties are listed alphabetically, and then townships within counties are alphabetized. I found no McGoughs or McGues in the 1860 census of Dakota Territory, Florida, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Utah.

I have tried to make connections between persons listed in the 1860 census and enlistments in the Union or Confederate armies in the Civil War. Several of these are nothing more than remote possibilities. I have included some places of enlistments of McGoughs in the Union or Confederate armies in the Civil War even though I found no listing there in the 1860 census. My hope is that future rearch will provide more information on these persons.
