Past Experiences

Writer, 1/96-9/96
O'Reilly & Associates, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Writer for the Technical Publications group, focusing on online writing. In September 1996 I switched from being a regular salaried employee of O'Reilly to working for them on contract.

Program Manager, 4/91-7/92
Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington. Program managed a tools group, which produced tools and promoted strategies to improve communication and information access within Microsoft. Designed user interfaces, wrote specifications, and coordinated development, documentation, testing, marketing (to Microsoft employees), and support of these tools. Tools included a Windows front end to Usenet News (called "WinBBS"), tools for linking email and news, and Windows bug tracking software. Reorganized Microsoft's over 200 internal news groups and promoted their use within the company. Wrote articles for Microsoft's internal newsletters. Note: Microsoft canceled the WinBBS project while it was in the prototype phase despite my exhortations that "we could sell this!" Thus missing an opportunity to develop a Windows interface to part of the Internet in 1992.

CBT Designer, Developer, and Technical Support Specialist, 2/89-4/91
Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington. Designed and implemented computer based training (tutorials, help, cue cards) for Access 1.0 and Basic language products, including Basic 7.0 and Visual Basic 1.0. Also provided technical support for writers, wrote batch files and macros, and worked with the software developers to ensure that online documentation worked with the products.

Computer Assisted Instruction Designer and Developer, 10/87-4/88
Institute for Mathematical Studies in the Social Sciences, Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. Developed and coded computer-assisted instruction for Calculus using Calvocal, a LISP-based language. (This project is now called Education Program for Gifted Youth.)

Mathematics and Computer Science Instructor, 1/86-7/87
St. Edward's University Mathematics Department, Austin, Texas. Taught computer programming and all levels of undergraduate mathematics including Calculus, Multi-Variable Calculus, Probability and Statistics, and Linear Algebra. Revised the Calculus syllabus.

Miscellaneous Teaching Jobs
Western Samoa Technical Institute (as a Peace Corps volunteer), North Seattle Community College, University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College, ASUW Experimental College. Taught all levels of high school and college mathematics, and some history and philosophy of mathematics.

Miscellaneous Computing Jobs
The Evergreen State College, Boeing Computer Services, University of Washington. Various computer support and programming positions.

Non Math and Non Computing Jobs
And in my younger days I worked at movie theatres, restaurants, a car wash, a nursing home; as a pizza delivery person, as a swim instructor and lifeguard, as a ski instructor and ski lift operator, and as a Rent-A-Wreck rental agent!
